Sally’s story:

The Julien Project enables people like Sally to make changes in their own lives.  Sally has struggled with mental health problems for many years and as a result was socially isolated, and unable to find employment. After participating in a Julien project program, she became one of our volunteers through the Supported Volunteering program. With the horticultural skills she gained and the support of the new community she became a part of, she initiated an entrepreneurial enterprise developing the garden surrounding her apartment building. Soon after, she was able to find employment.  By building community and skills, the Julien project helps people gain the confidence they need to move forward in their lives while enhancing the natural environment.

Testimonials:

Wayne, Rehabilitation Case Coordinator:
“I would say that the Julien Project has been the most positive event in my client’s life in quite some time. Without it, he may have slipped back into a state of being unwell. I want to thank Sharon Stewart and all the staff associated with the Julien Project for taking the time to make a difference in one young man’s life.”

Guelph Community Living, ARC
“Our clients beam with pride each week as they return to ARC with their projects, vegetables, and herbs.  Bringing back items from the garden allows us to continue programming here at ARC.  As a group we have dried herbs and packaged them for use our Food Services Department.  Soon, we plan to remove dried flowers from our presses which will then be used to make bookmarks and greeting cards this winter.

The Julien Project has offered our clients many benefits. This relaxed environment provides an opportunity for them to interact in a small group.  Also it has provided an outlet for stress often encountered here at the ARC Industries where we serve over 125 clients daily.  Workshops at the garden provide choice, problem solving, encourage creativity and offer individuals a sense of accomplishment.”
