The Julien Project has grown in only 5 years from an idea, the vision of our founder Sharon Stewart, to a thriving therapeutic gardening organization working with diverse populations. In 2010, The Julien Project engaged over 1,600 participants. The unique feature of the Julien Project is that all of the people who come to the garden, including those with special needs, support workers, primary care providers, family members, students, and volunteers, form the community and benefit from working together in the garden. Structured horticultural workshops, open seasonal garden activities, and special events are developed and delivered by a horticultural therapist to a variety of groups of people with varying ages, backgrounds and abilities. Participants are referred to the Julien Project through local health clinics, social service agencies, family physicians, case managers, family members, church groups, teachers, school boards and many other organizations. On-site, garden activities are held in the accessible courtyard garden, the vegetable field production area and in our indoor workshop. Off-site, activities occur in the greenhouse at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Secondary School.
